72 Hours in Amazing Alghero

Italy | 13 April, 2023 | 0 | by Julietta Henderson
72 Hours in Amazing Alghero

Alghero, which sits picturesquely on the north-west coast of Sardinia, in Italy, is popular with visitors keen to experience its wonderful ambience and many natural charms. It’s also an important historical site, and its authentic centre, encircled by ancient city walls, tells the story of more than four hundred years of Spanish rule through its architecture, culture, traditions and food.

If you’re planning on a visit to Sardinia, Alghero is a must. Here’s how we think you could best spend your time if you’ve got three days to make the most of this fabulous town.

How to Spend 72 Hours in Alghero

DAY ONE: Explore the Old Town

With its storied past written everywhere throughout its cobblestoned streets, Catalan architecture and the lively local culture of the people, the historic city centre is definitely the first place to start. Just by taking a relaxing stroll around, you’ll learn so much about the region, its people and traditions.

It’s impossible to get lost if you follow the 16th-century city walls known as the Bastioni. Make sure to notice the watchtowers that you’ll see along the way, which are known as Torre di San Giacomo, Torre della Polveriera and Torre di Sant’Elmo.

Within the walls of the historic centre are numerous highlights that you’ll probably come upon naturally, but keep an eye out particularly for the Santa Maria Cathedral, a 16th-century Gothic Catalan church with stunning Renaissance and Baroque interiors. San Francesco is another notable church, as well as St Michael and St Barbara – all of which are worthwhile having a look around inside.

There are plenty of places in town to stop for a spot of lunch or an aperitivo. As you walk the walls, keep an eye out for an area known as Bastioni Marco Polo, where you’ll be able to take your pick of many fantastic restaurants, or head to Piazza Civica.

DAY TWO: Head to the Beach

After a day spent soaking up all that history and culture, on day two you might want to relax and take advantage of the stunning beaches on offer – after all, Sardinia is an island! Alghero offers an ideal mix of vibrant, popular beaches and tiny tucked away coves where you might not see another soul. Depending on your mood, these are some you might choose.

Punta Negra: This is a lovely place to come and relax, but it’s still close to amenities. Situated near Fertilia, it’s very easy to get to.

Mugoni: This is one of the largest and best-facilitated beaches in the area. It’s popular with locals and families, and the clear, shallow waters make a great place to try out some watersports.

Cala Dragunara: Located at the foot of a cliff, this lovely sandy beach is small, safe and even has a kiosk and bar. It’s also the place from which to explore the interesting Neptune Caves.

These three beaches are just a small taste of the ones in the area – so if you’re feeling adventurous, jump in the car and get out and explore and you’ll no doubt find your own favourites.

DAY THREE: Museum and Shopping

On the final day of your itinerary, it would be remiss not to explore what the town has to offer in terms of shopping and its well-known museum.

Alghero is located along what’s known as the Coral Riviera, so visiting the Coral Museum, to learn about the city’s main natural product, is absolutely fascinating. Set within a gorgeous Art Deco building, the beautifully curated museum features many displays of coral – both in its natural form and in works of art by local craftsmen – along with information about its economic and cultural importance to the area.

You might be surprised at the quality and quantity of shopping at your disposal here! As the main hub for the region, there are plenty of excellent shops and boutiques selling jewellery featuring the stunning local coral, designer clothing, shoes and quirky souvenirs.

Once you’ve experienced Alghero you might decide that three days really isn’t enough – but that just gives you the perfect excuse to come back next year…

How to Get There

There are several airports from which to choose to get you from the UK to your holiday. There is actually an airport in Alghero, although you’ll have fewer options of available flights. Your best bet is to fly into Cagliari (CAL) (which has the most extensive range of available flights) or the more convenient Olbia (OLB) airport. The best way to ensure a hassle-free onward journey to your accommodation is on a pre-booked airport transfer from Olbia Airport to Alghero with Shuttle Direct. Once you land, a friendly experienced driver will get you to your destination without delay.

Types of Alghero Airport Transfer Services

No matter how you like to travel, Shuttle Direct has a transfer from Olbia airport to Alghero that will suit your budget. Here are the most popular options.

Taxi: Standing around in a queue is no way to start your holiday, so one idea is to pre-book a taxi from Olbia Airport to Alghero. Being able to arrange your ride before you leave home means no queuing and no frustrating delays.

Shuttle Bus: If you’re keen on keeping to a budget, then a shared shuttle bus airport transfer is the way to go. You’ll share the ride with other people going to the same destination, so it’s cheaper than a taxi while still offering top-notch convenience.

Private Transfer: Start your holiday the right way, with a private transfer from Olbia to Alghero. Choosing this kind of ride offers the highest levels of comfort and convenience and you’re guaranteed a door-to-door service, so you can just sit back and enjoy the ride.

Minibus Transfer: If you’re travelling with the family or a larger group of friends, you might want to consider booking a cost-effective minibus transfer. These large-capacity vehicles provide plenty of room for people and luggage, meaning you won’t have to bother with the hassle of booking several taxis or making sure you all get on the same shuttle.

Choosing the Right Alghero Airport Transfer

Pre-booking your airport transfer, Olbia to Alghero and back again, is the best way to ensure a hassle-free start and end to your holiday. However, before you make the decision on what service to choose, you should consider not only the cost, but also the convenience.

Cost: Before making a choice, ensure you compare the costs of the various kinds of airport transfers. Some people may feel more comfortable with a shared service to cut costs, while others may opt for a private airport transfer if money isn’t a problem.

Convenience: The other important factor is convenience. If you don’t mind sharing, a budget-friendly shuttle is a good choice, but if you prefer the luxury of a door-to-door service just for you, a private transfer from Olbia Airport to Alghero is ideal.
