Laidback and lovely: that, in a nutshell, describes a holiday on Gran Canaria, an island that’s widely known for its black lava landscapes and white sand beaches. If you’re looking for a leisurely escape from your everyday responsibilities (and the joke that is summer in the UK), why not recharge your batteries in Maspalomas, one of Gran Canaria’s top destinations for sun seekers?
While there’s often nothing better than a lazy day of basking in the sun and a refreshing dip in the ocean, those hoping for a little more will discover that there’s also no better base from which to explore the island’s wealth of attractions than this resort. In fact, you’ll realise just how lucky you are on our 30-minute transfer from Gran Canaria Airport to Maspalomas, during which you’ll pass by three of the best destinations for sun, shopping, scenery, sports and so much more. So, no napping during the drive! Keep your eyes peeled for our three favourite spots for day trips.
From gastronomy to nature to cultural festivals, the town of Ingenio is one of the most vibrant destinations along our route from Gran Canaria Airport to Maspalomas. The town is one of the best places to get a truly authentic feel for local life, and boasts several must-see (and must-eat) gems.
Food: Like other places throughout Spain, Gran Canaria is famous for its production of jámon (ham), which is particularly outstanding in Ingenio. In addition to sampling the traditional Iberian and Serrano ham, don’t miss out onthe localcochinillo negro, which is roasted and made from the meat of black suckling pigs. Savour the ham’s succulent flavour on its own, or slip a slice on the town’s celebrated pan de puño, a bread that’s been produced there for more than 250 years.
Nature: No need for diets, you can walk off the top-notch ham and bread in the town’s array of beautiful parks. While you’ll come across lovely sights as you stroll through the Parque Lectura Francisco Tarajana and the Parque Las Mimosas, the star of the show is definitely the Parque Néstor Álamo, which is home to one of the tallest palm trees in the Canary Islands – and in all of Spain, for that matter. The palmera paquesito is a whopping 43 metres tall – just don’t hurt your neck when you try to spot the top!
Culture: Great food, great parks and great parties – endless excitement awaits in Ingenio, which is also known for hosting lively festivals throughout the year. In addition to the Festival Internacional de Folklore, featuring traditional Canarian songs and dances, the Ingenio Cómico, a comedy festival in March and April, and the Ingenio Mágico, a magicians’ festival in December, are extremely popular among locals and visitors alike. The performers never fail to charm and delight their eager audiences.
Recommended Visit Time: A half-day trip to dabble in Ingenio’s gastronomy and nature, and a full-day trip to experience one of its festivals.
If you’re a shopaholic, look out for the town of Vecindario on your transfer from Gran Canaria Airport to Maspalomas – and get ready to swipe your credit card! A mere 20-minute drive from the resort, Vecindario tempts serious shoppers with aremarkable range of stores of diverse styles. Whether you’re looking for the latest designer accessories or the perfect holiday souvenir, you’re sure to snag a bargain as Vecindario is not a typical tourist town, making it significantly cheaper than the island’s main resorts. From the enormous Atlántico Shopping Centre to its three artisan markets (which are held on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday mornings) there’s no way you’ll return to your hotel empty-handed!
Recommended Visit Time: This depends entirely on your stamina! Either opt for a relaxed half-day trip, or shop until you drop during a full-day visit.
3. Bahía Feliz
So, you’ve taken our advice to visit Ingenio and Vecindario and are all shopped and cultured out? Not to worry – this is when Bahía Feliz comes to the rescue. Located a stone’s throw from Maspalomas, this tranquil oasis should be considered the perfect go-to place if you’re in need of some peace and quiet. In contrast to the bustling beach of Maspalomas (and nearby Playa del Inglés), the town’s small stretch of sand is the definition of tranquil. The pebble beach is the ideal place to hang out and finally finish the book that you’ve been reading for ages.
If you’d like to supplement your R&R with a bit of action, you won’t have to venture far as Vecindario is renowned for its excellent windsurfing conditions. While absolute beginners can take lessons at the local school in the mornings (when the water is generally calmer), seasoned surfers can show off their a-game in the afternoons. Deep-sea fishing, sailing and diving are also on offer, but don’t tell the other tourists: Vecindario’s water sports are a well-kept SEAcret!
Recommended Visit Time: A half-day visit should suffice if you’d like to top up your tan and head to town for lunch. If you’d like to surf, fish or sail as well, count on a full-day visit.
