3 Guaranteed Ways to Find Calm in Costa Calma

Diversity makes the world go around, which means we all want something different from a holiday. Some of us want the opportunity to discover new cultures, some to meet new friends, and some to simply top up the tan. But for many people, reconnecting with their inner peace to counteract the ever-increasing noise and stress of everyday life is the top goal. “Getting away from it all” has never sounded more appealing, so where better to find some calm than a place where even its name is full of wonderful promise. Welcome to Costa Calma…

Costa Calma: The “Quiet Coast”

A south-eastern coastal resort on the Canary island of Fuerteventura, Costa Calma is the second largest after Corralejo, but on arrival its ambience makes for an almost involuntary exhalation. Its name translates to “quiet coast” and there’s just something about the long, sandy beach, gently lapping ocean, and low rise development that tells you it’s going to live up to its name.

That’s not to say there’s not plenty to see and do, both in the town itself and the surrounding area. However, the beauty of Costa Calma is that there are some very enjoyable and accessible ways to do… not much at all! Here are three ways to enjoy a bit of navel-gazing in the beautiful environment of the Canary Islands.

Find Serenity on the Beach

The beach at Costa Calma is absolutely the star attraction, with its gleaming two kilometres of white sand, iridescent waters, and spectacular views. While there are facilities like sunbeds and parasols if you want them, the advantage of all that space is that it’s very easy to find your own little piece of Paradise, slightly away from the busier spots, where you can plot up and simply zone out. If you stroll even 100m in either direction from the promenade directly in front of the resort, you’ll find huge swathes of sand all to yourself. You can set up an umbrella, deck chair, or beach tent and read, sunbathe, doze in the sun, or just take some time to meditate and reflect on such an idyllic experience.

Along with the main Playa de Costa Calma, you might like to explore some of the neighbouring beaches. These include Playa Matas Blanca to the north (a local tip is to visit at sunrise for the most spectacular sunrises on the island), and Playa Esmeralda to the south, which has a “wilder” feel to it with no buildings nearby and is decorated with amazing volcanic rocks. But whatever beach you choose, serenity will never be far away…

Encounter Tranquillity in the Natural Park

The resort offers easy access to the beautiful Jandía Natural Park, located just over an hour away at the southern tip of Fuerteventura. Acclaimed for its great natural beauty and panoramic smorgasbord of views, the incredible landscape of undulating dunes, deserted coves, and soaring mountain peaks offers a heaven on earth for those seeking solitude in nature.

Designated a Natural Park since the eighties, there’s nowhere in the Canaries like the Jandía Peninsula in terms of biodiversity and sheer scale of unspoilt views as far as the eye can see. There are plenty of ways to find some inner peace in these breathtaking and unique surroundings – including organised small group 4 x 4 trips if you’re interested in covering a lot of ground. But if you’re looking to explore on your own and get the peace and inspiration you’re craving, there’s a plethora of designated hiking and walking trails you can embark on. (Make sure you take a map, sunscreen, snacks and water.) You’ll encounter an abundance of birdlife and local fauna along the way, so keep your eyes peeled for the famous Atlantic Lizard and the Majorera land mullet. Don’t worry if you’re not up to a strenuous hike, there are plenty of relaxed walks suitable for beginners and the less energetic, and the tranquility is always free…

Discover Zen in an Oasis

A wonderful way to spend a zen-derful few hours, the Oasis Wildlife Park is definitely not just for children – although it is very popular with families. Don’t think it’s just another run-of-the-mill theme park, though, this place has an inspiring ethos to protect the island’s biodiversity and share the incredible plants and wildlife with visitors. Billed as “a journey through nature”, the open air park is a truly remarkable achievement, delivering on its promise of serenity, harmony and limitless beauty.

Take your pick from the numerous experiences offered and get up close and personal with the countless species of plants and over 3,000 animals in a genuinely educational way. Choose one or choose them all!
