For some people, a short summer break is all about relaxation and topping up the tan, while for others it’s a chance to get active. Torremolinos, on Spain’s much-loved Costa del Sol, is a very popular coastal resort – and, apart from its gorgeous beaches, great shopping, excellent dining, and a fantastic range of accommodation, it’s because it has the ability to satisfy both those kinds of visitors. If you’re the latter, and you’re heading to Torremolinos for a few days, if you like to hike, ride, cycle, sail, swing a club, and get energetic under the heat of the Spanish sun, this is for you!

Getting Active is Easy in Torremolinos
By virtue of its location, sandwiched between the coast and the mountains, you’re never going to be short of active pursuits in this very lively holiday resort town. Since the tourism boom in the 1960s, keeping visitors occupied with history, culture and all manner of relaxation has more or less become its unofficial mantra – which is great news if you’ve only got a few days and you want to pack in as much as possible. Setting aside the historical and cultural highlights for the moment (they are many and varied, but that’s another story!), let’s focus on what you can get stuck into with a short and very sweet break in Torremolinos.
Head Out For a Hike
This is one of the easiest and most accessible ways to explore the local region, get active, and top up your tan as well! Depending on your level of fitness and energy, you can choose from a huge range of marked trails and walks that vary in length and difficulty.
One of the most picturesque (and easiest) routes takes you along the coastline, starting from the promenade in town and stretching for six kilometres. If you want to turn it into something a little more than a seaside stroll, you can follow “El Camino de Agua” (The Water Trail), which takes you from Bajondillo Beach along the promenade, past numerous other small beaches and coves before crossing the road to Los Pinares and into the mountains. As the name suggests, it follows the route of both natural and man-made water courses that have been vital to the town over the centuries.
Another popular hike is the Coastal Walkway, which runs the length of the Costa del Sol from Estepona to Nerja. Torremolinos is on Stage 6 of this epic path and you can do the section in around two hours (rating of medium difficulty).
The Great Path of Malaga is another route that runs through Torremolinos, taking in Benalmádena and Alhaurín de la Torre, which is Stage 34 of the total 35 stages. It will take around four hours to complete this section and it’s classified medium.
Finally, for those really looking to commune with nature, La Canada del Lobo (Wolf Ravine) takes around two-and-a-half hours to complete (medium difficulty, again) and takes in some spectacular views from the elevated vantage.
Hop on a Horse
If you fancy four legs instead of two, there are some amazing opportunities for horse-back riding. In Andalucia, horses are more than a hobby – they’re a way of life and a heritage of which the locals are extremely proud. There are often events and displays featuring the beautiful Andalusian horses performing their intricate steps, with their riders dressed in traditional garb. If you get the chance to see one of these, don’t pass it up. (A Spanish horse and flamenco show is a spectacular experience!)
Aside from that, you can join any one of numerous horse-related activities – including riding classes for everyone from beginners to those looking to improve their skills. You can also do guided tours of professional stables, but the most popular thing to do is join a group trek on horse-back out into the mountains or along the beautiful beaches. You’ll have a full safety briefing and you can choose a trek (and a horse) based on your individual riding skills.
Get Out on the Golf Course
If you’ve never tried golf, you’ve picked the perfect place to begin. The Costa del Sol is a firm favourite with the golfing fraternity (it’s often called the Costa del Golf!), with plenty of world-class courses to tempt even the most discerning expert. The great thing about the course at Torremolinos is that there’s something there for everyone’s game – and that includes beginners. Situated very close to town, it’s a “par 3”, nine-hole course, which includes a driving range, club house and bar. You can book in for a lesson with a pro, then head out on your own, with another bonus being the fantastic views from the greens.
If you’re feeling adventurous in your game and you want to try a few other courses you’re in luck. In a radius of about 25 kms around Torremolinos, there are over 20 golf courses, including some that are rated among the best in the country. They include the renowned 18-hole Benalmadena Golf, and Torrequebrada Golf, which has played host to the Spanish Open. Some of that brilliance might just rub off…
There are so many ways to get active in the great outdoors on a mini-break in Torremolinos – these are just three of them. If you’re lucky enough to have longer to spend in this vibrant coastal gem, no doubt you’ll discover a few more! There’s cycling, sailing, boating, fishing, diving, kayaking, stand-up paddle boarding… you get the picture.

You’ll pay a little extra than for a shared service, but the payoff is that you’ll have the vehicle to yourself and there’s no other stops along the way.
