The spectacular weather, stunning beaches, and diverse landscape of the islands in this famous archipelago are a temptation too good to resist. A Costa to Costa Mini Road Trip
Set on the gorgeous south coast of Tenerife, Costa Adeje is much-loved and well-renowned for its idyllic mix of picturesque beaches and surrounding natural beauty. While there’s plenty to enjoy in the town itself, including great restaurants, beach clubs, cocktail bars, and a range of tours and activities out on the water and up to the mountains, it’s also in the ideal position to jump in a rental car and explore independently.
Even if you’ve only got one day to dedicate to a mini road trip, that’s enough time to visit these places – all set in the short 20-minute journey between Costa Adeje and Costa del Silencio.
Playa de las Americas
You’ll barely have time to warm up the engine as your first stop is just three minutes away! This famous resort really is the lively heart of the island. Its beachfront promenade actually runs all the way back to Costa Adeje in one direction and to (your next stop) Los Cristianos in the other. But even though you’re so close to “home”, it’s a very different vibe here.
Park up and go for a stroll along the promenade, past lively cafes and restaurants which, depending on the time of day, may be spilling over with youthful revellers. Whereas Costa Adeje is known for its sophistication and slightly laidback personality, Playa de las Americas is definitely the excitable younger sister! The beach and nightlife really are the two biggest drawcards here, so if you just want to enjoy a short visit, have a coffee or an ice-cream to fuel you for your next marathon drive…
Los Cristianos
Four minutes down the road is Los Cristianos, a vibrant coastal resort with gorgeous golden sand beaches, and a lovely promenade lined with cafes, restaurants and shops. This is also an excellent place to try your hand at watersports, with numerous operators set up on the beach, along with deck chairs and umbrellas if you’d prefer a siesta! The waters are calm and inviting, so you won’t be able to resist a quick dip, or you can be more adventurous and hire a pedalo or kayak to paddle out and check out the views from the ocean. You can even book a kayak tour which takes you out to meet some sea turtles in their natural environment.
The pedestrianised centre of town is full of fresco art and charming little streets to wander along, admiring a mixture of authentic local crafts, tourist tatt, and interesting architecture – don’t miss the whitewashed Parroquia Nuestra Señora del Carmen, a church with a very unusual configuration. Now might be a good time to grab some lunch before hopping back in the car and heading south.
Palm Mar
Another 12 minutes down the road, you’ll come to Palm Mar, a tranquil resort that’s not quite landed on the tourist trail – yet. In fact, much of its appeal lies in the fact that you have to choose to divert there off the highway. Up until about a decade ago, it was a small local village where some homes didn’t even have electricity, however its location at the foot of the Montana de Guaza has slowly been gaining attention with visitors looking to get out and about in nature. It puts you within easy distance of the volcanic nature reserve of Malpais de la Rasca, to the east, which is becoming popular with hikers and walkers.
Palm Mar is a wonderful place to spend some time, because it gives you a very different glimpse into life in Tenerife. That’s not to say it’s a one-horse town with no amenities; it’s renowned as an excellent dive site (with caves and wrecks in the surrounding waters), and there are some great cafes and restaurants. You could enjoy a peaceful stroll along the beachfront before it’s back in the car for your final 13-minute drive.
Costa del Silencio
Costa del Silencio is the perfect example of Tenerife’s diversity and it might surprise you to know it was actually one of the first resorts built on the island – back in the 1960s. Somehow it’s managed to retain its relaxed atmosphere, despite its relative popularity with tourists. While the beach is small, it’s pretty, and there are plenty of amenities; but the real highlight of the resort is Playa Amarilla, which is part of an underwater reserve. It’s a fantastic place to snorkel and dive against the backdrop of the striking Montãna Amarilla – the ocre-coloured slopes providing a dramatic contrast to the ocean.
All this is within just 20 minutes of your base in Costa Adeje! Getting out and about on the roads of Tenerife, even on a short, easy itinerary like this, is a superb way to get an understanding of the geography and landscape of the island, and maybe plan your next holiday in the Canaries…
