Get Set for Action, Sun and Family Fun in Costa Teguise

Its name might be a bit of a tongue twister, but there’s nothing hard to love about Costa Teguise, on Lanzarote. A charming, lively town, the spectacular kind of beaches you’d expect to find in the Canary Islands, and enough activities – both land and water based – to keep every member of the family happy on a much-anticipated holiday. Let’s face it, everyone has a different idea of fun, but the best kind of family getaway is one that combines outdoor activities, a bit of exploring in a new and interesting destination, and a good dose of general lazing about soaking up some sun. Good news – Costa Teguise delivers!

Action, Sun and Family Fun

Just for the record, Costa Teguise rhymes with “easy” (sort of…) – which is exactly the kind of laid-back ambience you’ll discover in this vibrant coastal resort. Known for its gorgeous beaches (of course), huge array of watersports, cultural attractions, and proximity to numerous water and wildlife parks, there’s no shortage of highlights on offer to create a family-friendly itinerary for a few days or even longer.

While just being away, with the beach on the doorstep and the freedom from school and regular life hum-drum, is enough for some children, it pays to have some other options up your sleeve.

Aquarium, Waterpark, Theme Park!

OK, hold onto your hats because there are decisions to be made. Children are spoiled for choice when it comes to kid-friendly fun on Lanzarote – and there’s not much that can beat a theme or water park, unless it’s an aquarium. When you stay in Costa Teguise you’ll have all three.

The Lanzarote Aquarium: This is a fantastic place for children of all ages, home to a vast array of marine species and interactive experiences. One of the largest aquariums in the Canaries, right there in Costa Teguise, the highlight for many is the underwater viewing tunnel, where you’re literally surrounded by marine life, including lazily swimming sharks above and all around. Aside from the sharks there are plenty of other exhibits throughout 33 aquarium tanks, including three “tactile aquariums” to get involved in. A truly memorable day out.

Rancho Texas Park: Just a short 20-minute drive away, this vast Western-themed park is absolutely jam-packed with fun and includes a zoo and a water park. Spend a day exploring the exhibits and events like birds of prey demonstrations, dolphin and sea lion shows, the zoo – with everything from white lions to penguins – the water slides, and lunch in a Wild-West saloon! It’ll be hard to drag the kids away, but remind them there’s always…

Aquapark Costa Teguise: The Big Daddy of water parks on Lanzarote, it’s thrills and spills galore here, with something to entice children of all ages. It’s well set out, with three sections (according to age) of slides so nobody has to feel like they’re missing out. This one is definitely a full-day experience, but don’t worry, there are plenty of places for parents to relax in the shade with a cool drink while you wait – or better still (if you dare) join in the fun on the aptly named “Kamikaze” slide…

Unique Attractions Kids Will Love

Along with the old favourites above, you’ll have the opportunity to treat the kids to some other slightly left-of-centre experiences that will earn you some hefty Brownie points!

The Cactus Gardens: The Jardin de Cactus (situated in the little town of Guatiza, about 15 minutes away) is home to a staggering 4,500 cactus, and even the hardest-to-please children can’t help but be in awe of these quirky plants in their myriad shapes and sizes. You’re free to wander around at your own pace looking at the huge variety of cacti – with the indisputable king, the 8-metre giant that presides over the entrance gate. This is something the children won’t get to see anywhere else, so it’s well worth the short drive to spend a few hours here.

Jameos de Agua: What child wouldn’t like an adventure in an underground natural cave complex with a massive lagoon as its centrepiece? An absolutely fascinating and awe-inspiring experience for young and old, the site is a 20-minute drive from Costa Teguise. While it is a natural phenomenon – formed by the collapse of a volcanic tube of the Corona volcano – the famous artist Cesar Manrique took the theatre of nature to new levels by transforming it into a truly unique space – with his aim to create a genuine harmony of nature, environment and art. There’s no doubt Manrique succeeded, and this basalt cave system is quite surreal under his artistic touch. Not to be missed!
