Get to Know the Heart of Jandía, in the Canaries

For visitors to Fuerteventura, the stunning Jandía Peninsula is a must-see on the itinerary. Even those who stay in the busier tourist towns in the north, like Corralejo, are keen to experience the “wilder”, southern reaches of the island. But for anyone whose primary aim is to get close to nature without the sometimes frenetic pace of touristy resorts, Jandía is the perfect place to choose as a base. From gorgeous beaches and natural parks, to fascinating history and culture on abundant display, this could be your new favourite place in the Canaries.

Jandía: A Haven of Natural Beauty

Its geography at the southernmost point of Fuerteventura affords Jandía the reputation as one of the most stunning places on the island in terms of natural beauty. But despite that – or hopefully because of it – the region has been less developed. The beaches are wide and windswept, the dunes seem untouched by human intervention, the rugged cliffs rise from deserted, inaccessible coves, and there’s a general sense of isolation from the rest of the island. But the wonderful thing is that you don’t need to be an intrepid adventurer to experience all this breathtaking natural beauty, because the resort town of Jandía itself is well-facilitated with shops, restaurants, and plenty of high quality accommodation. It’s the ideal place to kick back for a few days, explore at your leisure, and discover the authentic heart of the region.

Miles and Miles of Brilliant Beaches

The beaches of the Jandía Peninsula enjoy almost legendary status, and there are plenty to choose from in both directions from the resort. A few stand out for various reasons.

If you want to stick close to home at first, Playa del Matorral will never disappoint. With its crystal-clear waters, and requisite wide, sandy shores that stretch for 3km, the beach is topped off by the crowning jewel of the famous Morro Jable lighthouse. You can rent watersport equipment including kayaks and paddleboards if you’re feeling energetic.

Playa de Barca is defined by its picturesque tidal lagoons, shallow waters and strong winds, which in recent years have seen it become popular with windsurfers and kitesurfers – so much so that it’s hosted several major international competitions. That aside, it’s an absolute dream to spend a few hours lazing on the golden sands, or strolling along the water’s edge in the sun.

Jandía

Playa de Cofete is not a place to come for a leisurely swim (in fact, it’s downright dangerous – so don’t!). It’s a place to soak up the pristine, untamed shores and revel in a truly spectacular setting. Hunkered against a dramatic backdrop of volcanic mountains, the more than 10km of sand stretches as far as the eye can see. Conditions can get pretty wild, with crashing waves, strong, unpredictable currents, and battering winds, but spend some time walking barefoot along the shoreline and you’ll make memories to last forever. (Incidentally, it’s a favoured beach for the occasional nudist, so if you don’t want those kinds of memories, avert your eyes!)

Morro Jable

A Natural Park of Great Significance

There’s arguably nowhere better in the Canaries for nature lovers than the Jandía Natural Park – the largest protected area in the archipelago. The extraordinarily diverse landscape hosts an eco-system made up of tidal lagoons, rolling dunes, dramatic mountains (Pico de la Zarza soars to 807m), and beautiful beaches – with the abovementioned Playa de Cofete falling within its area. The park is brimming with an abundance of flora and fauna, including an incredible array of birdlife, much of it endemic.

There’s a way for everyone to get their fill of this spectacular area, with a host of excursions to choose from, ranging from adrenaline-inducing 4 x 4 safaris and buggy tours through the dunes, to hiking in the mountains, and whale and dolphin watching off the coastline.

A Taste of History and Culture

As well as being an oasis of natural beauty, you’ll also have the opportunity to delve into the region’s heritage with a visit to the neighbouring town of Morro Jable. This former fishing village is the original settlement, now basically adjoined to Jandía –  the two making an interesting contrast. It has a far more traditional feel intertwined with the trappings of modern life, and there’s an authenticity that speaks to the long list of influences that have shaped its culture and cuisine.

The town has a lovely air of old world romance about it, with a tangle of alleyways and streets lined with tiny shops, cafes, and tapas bars. Take a stroll around and you’ll encounter the town’s first church, Ermita de San Miguel, and a little further up the hill, the impressive Nuestra Señora del Carmen church.

A few days spent exploring the wonderful region of the Jandía Peninsula will give you enough time to discover its true heart, and lose yours to its many charms…
