Super Ski Break Resort Guide: Breuil Cervinia

Contents:

Heading off to Europe for a few days of invigorating Alpine skiing is one of the most accessible options for a winter mini-break. With fantastic deals available for even some of the most popular resorts, it’s a quick, convenient way of cramming a week of fun, relaxation and pampering into just a few days.

While France and Switzerland are arguably the most popular places to put a pin in a map and choose from a vast number of resorts, you should never overlook Italy in your search for the perfect ski holiday.

Chances are you’ve never heard of Breuil Cervinia (also known simply as Cervinia), but you might just have discovered a hidden gem…

A Mini Mountain Break in Breuil Cervinia

The village that was formerly Breuil was originally a place frequented by adventurous mountaineering types, and used as a base for climbing around Monte Cervino – the mountain more familiarly known as the Matterhorn, which separates Italy from Switzerland. It was developed into a ski resort and renamed Breuil Cervinia.

Situated in the extensive Valle d’Aosta region of Italy, Breuil Cervinia is linked with its far more famous counterpart Zermatt, as well as Valtournenche, to form one of the largest ski resorts in the world. If the promise of stunning views, high-altitude skiing, good infrastructure, value for money, excellent apres ski, and reliable, quality snow conditions sounds tempting, this could be the place for you.

Let’s Talk Snow

Sitting at 2,050m, the resort delivers a long season of snow-sure conditions and even summer skiing. There is a great variety of terrain, with slopes to suit beginners, intermediate and advanced skiers. It’s also really popular with snowboarders and freeriders — including tree skiing. Linked with the slopes of Zermatt, there are over 350 km of pistes at your disposal (150 km in Breuil Cervinia itself).

The slopes are basically broken into three areas:

  • Plan Maison: great for warm ups and getting your confidence, connects to Zermatt
  • Laghi Cime Bianche: steep and long pistes, connected to Valtournenche & Zermatt
  • Klein Matterhorn glacier area: easy, picturesque glacier skiing

As a general rule-of-thumb, beginners and intermediates will find more around the Breuil Cervinia slopes, while those who want to challenge themselves will find a world of fun over in Zermatt.

Infrastructure

With its growing popularity and the need to keep up with the impressive facilities of its high-end neighbour, Zermatt, the ski lift infrastructure has seen a marked improvement over the past few years (although it should be noted that some of it is a bit dated). The immediate area combined with Valtournenche is served by around 22 lifts, including some new state-of-the-art chair lifts. For the adventurous experts seeking an adrenaline boost, heli-skiing is also available.

In terms of a lift pass, you can purchase one to ski just the Italian sectors, but if you want to take advantage of the interlinked network between Breuil Cervinia, Valtournenche, and Zermatt, you’ll need to purchase an International Pass, which gives you access to the entire 350 km of slopes.

Accommodation and Après

The resort has been purpose-built, so much of the accommodation is modern, although the village does retain some of its historical charm. While there are some dated buildings, some of the newer hotels have managed to incorporate a sense of traditional character to their design. Many of the options afford ski-in, ski-out access to the slopes, which is of huge appeal — particularly for those on a short mini-break.

Both on and off the slopes there’s a fantastic variety of bars and restaurants to enjoy some apres ski refreshments and entertainment. Some of the slopeside bars get very busy towards the end of the day, so if you prefer peace and quiet, the advice is to head early to the ones in the village. The cuisine ranges from casual pizzerias to high-end fine dining and cocktail bars, so decide your mood and choose your food!
