Deciding on a ski resort can be tricky, but it is also a decision that should not be taken lightly. This will have a direct impact on how successful and enjoyable the trip is – this is particularly true if you are travelling with teens.
The terrain will need to be exhilarating and challenging, but if it’s too difficult then they will become disheartened and lose interest quickly. One resort which has this healthy balance is Sölden, one of Europe’s most renowned resorts nestled in the scenic Ötztal valley of Tyrol in Austria.
Sölden boasts superb ski and snowboard terrain with over 145km of slopes, guaranteed snow and an excellent snowpark. When you factor in the highly rated ski schools, it means that this is a resort where they are sure to hone their skills and return home a happy and more confident rider. They will also be able to boast to their mates that they shredded powder on the slopes that were featured in the 2015 James Bond film Spectre!
Looking to soak up some culture as well as shred powder? Read up on the nearby city of Innsbruck.
The kids are sure to love Area 47, which is a cool snowpark that features dozens of boxes, jumps, rails, tubes, wallrides and other features that make for a thrilling experience. Area 47 is also home to a handful of well-designed beginners areas, so it is a great place for novices or less confident riders to develop their skills and get to grips with skiing or snowboarding.
With a versatile setup that is always being extended, this snowpark is quickly becoming one of Europe’s favourites with winter sports fanatics – it is easy to see why. Any rider will get a real kick out of Area 47 regardless of their skill level.
Big Fun at Funslope
Funslope at Sölden is ideal for those that have a little more experience and anyone seeking some action and adventure away from the regular ski slopes. This epic 680-metre long course is an amazing design, with features that include waves, jumps, steep curves, tunnels, a Fun Twister and more just waiting to be conquered! It is a unique and refreshing experience and a big reason why Sölden is rapidly growing in popularity. The kids will never get bored of the challenges that Funslope throws up and they will enjoy trying to beat their best times each day.
Ski Schools for Teens
I think that in order for the ski break to be a complete success, youngsters should feel like they have improved and return home much more confident in their abilities. Sölden is highly rated for its ski schools, with the Yellow Power Ski School offering a special teen ski lesson programme designed to help young skiers develop in a fun and supportive environment. The lessons are in groups of up to 8 people (between the ages of 9 and 14) where there is a high level of personal involvement, focus on group dynamics and plenty of encouragement – this will see them make new friends whilst also bettering their skills.
There is another teen ski and snowboard course for those between 13 and 17 which teaches the riders how to ski or board down the valley, whilst also incorporating a few cool tricks along the way. If they have an interest in freeriding, sign them up for the Youth Sölden group where they can ski or snowboard through the stunning off piste areas and make new friends from around the world.
After Dark Adventures
Boredom is a major concern for teenagers when on holiday, but you do not have to worry about that at Sölden. Once a week, there is a fantastic night skiing and evening show which is, essentially, a party under the stars. The thrill of tearing down the pristine ski run in the dark with the floodlights only illuminating the snow is a special experience that is sure to get their blood pumping!
They can then enjoy the fun-filled evening show, which includes DJs, action shows, fireworks and delicious local grub at an inviting self-service restaurant or a cool culinary adventure called “The Wishing Table” at Tiroler Stube.
How to Get There
