Traversing Tossa de Mar with Teens

Chosen Tossa de Mar for your family holiday this year? Then you will be probably be interested to know what’s on there for the kids. Teenagers can be difficult to please, but take my guide to what’s on in Tossa de Mar, and you will have plenty of ideas on how to keep them happy.

Read on for more information on taking the family to Tossa de Mar!

Family Friendly Guide to Tossa de Mar

What To See

Tossa de Mar old town Vila Vella in Costa Brava of Catalonia masonry stone

Vila Vella, the old town of Tossa de Mar, is a wonderful introduction to the history of the place. In complete contrast to what you now see along the seafront, the old town is entirely surrounded by a city wall, complete with 7 watchtowers. The views from here are stunning, both towards the beautiful white sandy beaches and the mountains of the Selvathe Cadiretes. Get the kids to explore and they will discover all kinds of interesting historical facts about this Catalan town.

Els Ametllers Roman Villa

Ruines de l'ancienne glise de Tasa de Mar

Another historical gem, this Roman villa dates back over 2000 years. A hugely important monument, it offers an insight into how the Romans farmed and cultivated wine in the Mediterranean region at the time when they dominated the area. Although visiting ruins might not be high on the agenda of your kids, persuade them to visit this one and they will soon change their minds!

Beach Bliss

Small beach in Tossa de Mar, Costa Brava, Spain.

There are three main beaches in Tossa de Mar, all ideal for catching the rays and enjoying some down time with a book. The main one, Platja Gran, despite being the busiest, is still ranked among the best beaches in the world. Sheltered, calm and excellent for swimming, it is easy to spend a day here. Kids will love this one, as there is plenty of ‘people watching’ to do.

La Mer Menuda is a favourite with families. Smaller than Platja Gran, it still has plenty of facilities so you don’t need to worry about packing for every eventuality when you want to spend a day here.

If you have kids who don’t mind a bit of peace and tranquillity, head to Platja d’es Codolar – a hidden gem surrounded by cliffs. The warm waters are sublime and, along with the soft silky sand, make this place a very special one.

What to Do

Shopping

Two girls walking on the street. They are two young girls walking together and holding their hands. They are wearing summer clothes and they are happy.

Most teenagers love to shop and the Vila Nova (new town) is bursting with boutiques and designer label shops that teenagers will go mad for. From leather bags to jewellery and from perfumes to classy souvenirs, there is something for every shopaholic here. I would watch their spending though, as they could go overboard in this friendly and welcoming shopping mecca.

Diving

Young woman scuba diving signals okay

Tossasub Diving Centre is top of the list for anyone interested in trying scuba diving. I know plenty of teenagers who love the challenge of a new sport and, with the added bonus of being subjected to a whole new underwater world of delights, this is one that should be fully encouraged.

Paintball

Happy team of five paintball players outdoors

Want some adrenaline fuelled family fun? A day of paintballing is an exhilarating option. Run by Can Garriga Paintball – the activity involves playing the game in a shaded pine and oak forest on one of 5 game fields. Safe, secure, and lots of fun, this is one that will tire out even the most energetic of kids!

Scuba Diving and Snorkelling

Sub Mares run an excellent diving school but they also offer snorkelling, which is a more relaxed alternative for anyone just wanting to bob about watching the fish and enjoy a peaceful introduction to life under the sea.

Read up on the options of courses and days out.

Speed Boat Rides

Spring Break Jet Skier

Probably one of the best activities on offer in Tossa de Mar for teenagers with a thirst for adventure is a speedboat ride. Catering for families with kids of all ages, the Splash Ocean Adventures Company have a high safety record. The one-hour trip now includes a chance to snorkel, with all equipment provided. They even take photos for you, so tell the kids to leave the iPhones at the hotel if they don’t want to risk dropping them in the water!

How to Get to Tossa de Mar

tossa

Tossa de Maar is less than 40km from Girona Airport, which is well served by flights with Ryanair from London Stansted. In around two hours from taking off in London you could be on the way to starting your holiday. Ryanair offer some good deals on flights, and if you book in advance you can pick up a return for £150 per person.

Travelling with teenagers and all of their luggage can be a trial and you don’t want to be fighting with public transport options when you arrive in Girona. Pre book a fixed price transfer with Shuttle Direct and let them get you from the airport to your hotel or the centre of resort in a fast, efficient and comfortable manner. For less than €14 per person for the 45 minute transfer to Tossa de Mar, you and the gang could be at your hotel and all set for a great holiday in no time.

Where to Stay:

Premier Gran Hotel Reymar & Spa Superior – This impressive hotel has all the facilities a family need for their holiday. While free Wi-Fi and satellite TV will please the kids, mums and dads can make the most of the hot tub, Turkish and Finnish saunas and massage treatments. Rooms are large and all have private bathrooms, which is very important when you have older kids. Tennis and Ping-Pong facilities are offered at the Premier Gran Hotel Reymar, which are another added bonus if you have active kids always looking for something to do.

Delfín – At Delfín you can expect great value for money. Generous buffet meals will make growing teenagers very happy, as will the free Wi-Fi. The location, only a minute’s walk from the beach, is a plus, as is the sunny rooftop terrace with hot tub. Rooms are spacious too, which means there is plenty of space for everyone to spread out.

Hotel Mar Menuda – Another favourite with families is the Hotel Mar Menuda. It is small and personal and is perfectly located with direct access to the beach. If your kids are mature enough to be let loose, you can let them head off to the beach on their own, knowing they are still close by. The food is wonderful at this hotel and you and the kids can try all manner of local dishes.
