This lovely island is a relative newbie on the tourist trail, but between the beaches, the history and architecture, it shapes up admirably. The capital, Vathi, is decorated with neo-Classical architecture set around a horseshoe bay. It's home to the Samos Archaeological Museum, which is one of the most important historical sites. Pythagorion is a former fortified port town, with Roman and Greek ruins. Just behind the town you'll find the Monastery of Panagia Spiliani, which dates back to the 16th century. Héralion, the Temple of Hera, is a fascinating archaeological site and the most visited place on the island. For more history, visit the nearby Aqueduct of Eupalinos, which was at one time considered one of the Wonders of the World.
