Mallorca is always a good idea, with its stunning climate, endless beaches, and mouthwatering cuisine. The largest of the Spanish Balearic islands, Mallorca is renowned as an authentic and very laidback destination, popular with those looking to mix a healthy serving of culture with their fun in the sun. Sa Coma, situated in the northeast of the island, is home to a gorgeous sandy beach (often cited as one of the best on Mallorca) and idyllic, calm waters, but the region is also imbued with a fascinating sense of history, making it the perfect place to delve into the Balearic culture.

Sunny Sa Coma: Gem of Mallorca’s Northeast
There’s a lot to love about Sa Coma, and it’s no surprise it’s a popular resort with families, with its relaxed ambience, safe swimming and, of course, that glorious Blue Flag beach. But don’t think that it caters solely to the bucket and spade demographic – because that couldn’t be further from the truth.
The small town with its great facilities, makes the perfect getaway for anyone looking for the famous Balearic charm and hospitality, alongside plenty of opportunities to go a little “deeper”, in terms of authentic cultural attractions. If you’re staying in Sa Coma for a few days or a few weeks, here are some important experiences not to miss.
A Taste of the Talaiots
Dating back 2,500 to 3,000 years, the Bronze Age stone megalithic structures known as “Talaiots” can be found in various sites dotted around Mallorca and Menorca. Sa Coma is the ideal place to encounter them for yourself, with two very close by.
Little more than five minutes from Sa Coma, the incredibly well-preserved Talaiotic settlement in the village of S’Illot is considered to be one of the most significant in the Balearics. You can wander around the stone structures, which were used as various kinds of civil buildings and residential homes, all set around a large central tower. The site is curated with great consideration, with information boards citing the history and use of each structure, and wooden platforms and walkways for easy access.
The other site easily accessible (just a few minutes by car, or 15 minutes’ walk) from Sa Coma is Talaiot Na Pol. Again, the site is beautifully preserved, with a central tower encircled by a low, horseshoe-shaped wall. In more recent times an important discovery of a cave beneath the structure was unearthed, and further conservation efforts are ongoing.
Castello de Punta de n’Amer
The Punta de n’Amer Natural Park is a site of outstanding natural beauty, situated under 10 minutes by road from the resort – or if you’re feeling energetic, you can walk it in less than 45 minutes. This protected area contains a network of picturesque hiking trails, affording encounters with the abundant flora and fauna, stunning coastal views, and a diverse mixture of habitats including scrub, pine forests, and dunes.
A spectacular nature-based experience, the highlight (or reward, whichever way you look at it) is reaching the 17th-century Castell de sa Punta n’Amer. This defensive watchtower is set at 35 metres above sea level, giving it a prime outlook over the ocean for its original purpose of warning against marauding pirates. Even though it fell out of use in the 19th century, it was recommissioned as a communications post during the Spanish Civil War, in the late 1930s. It is built in a square formation, unusual for its time, and you can go inside (it’s free to enter) and climb the central staircase to take in spectacular views over the bay of Cala Millor and back to Sa Coma.
The Markets
You may think this an odd addition to suggested cultural activities, but spending a couple of hours wandering around the regular Wednesday Sa Coma Farmers’ Markets provides an insight that’s hard to get in any other way. The markets are a microcosm of authentic Balearic life, with the local people coming out in droves to do their weekly shopping and socialising as they’ve done (in some shape or form) for centuries. As always, the true heart and soul of a place can be found where the locals go, and it’s a real pleasure to wander around looking at crafts and souvenirs, and talking to the friendly stallholders. You’ll be offered samples of cheese, meats, bread, and other produce, and it’s hard to resist picking up some tasty treats to take away with you.
A night market also runs from May through to October, and it’s a wonderful place to come and soak up the colourful atmosphere. Set against a backdrop of live music, you can shop for fruit, vegetables, cured meats, and olive oil, alongside a host of arts and crafts, textiles, shoes, and ceramics.
If you’re looking for a Mallorcan holiday to remember, it’s hard to beat a week or so staying in lovely Sa Coma. This charming resort town is a place where, for little effort, you’ll be able to immerse in the local history and culture in a very satisfying way. Then, of course, you can head to the beach…
