Breuil Cervina: Superstar Skiing and Much More
A favourite Alpine resort not just in winter but during the warmer months as well, you can’t get a reputation like that of Breuil Cervinia without having a few extra tricks up your sleeve. As one of the highest resorts in the Alps, the skiing is outstanding, comprising a vast area crossing the border into Switzerland, made up of wide, lazy tree-lined beginner pistes all the way up to adrenaline-inducing steep downhills over in Zermatt to challenge the powderhounds.
But the resort shines in other ways as well, with a great range of activities to explore when you finally peel your skis off your feet.
Fun for All at the Fun Park
The words “fun park” aren’t just for the ears of young visitors to the resort (although there is a dedicated “kids’ zone” too). Situated at the base of the Cretaz chairlift, the Fun Park (aka the Snow and Ice Park) is packed to the brim with high energy amusements for anyone looking for a good time.
The smorgasbord of activities include more sedate pastimes like ice skating and mini-golf, then ramp up to bumper cars on ice, electric go-karts, snow sledding and tubing, and even a quad track on ice. As you can imagine, for families the fun park is a dream come true, but it’s also a fantastic place for people of all ages to come for a bit of downtime or to catch some rays on the relaxing sun deck.
The Museum on the Mountain
For a little cultural aside, you can take the cable car 3,500m up the mountain for a pretty unique experience, a visit to the highest museum in Europe! Located on Plateau Rosa, Una Montagna di Lavoro is dedicated to the history of the ski lifts of the resort, which is a lot more interesting than it might sound. The museum is curated from a collection of photographs and videos that depict the long, arduous task of the construction of the first cable car system here in 1936. Entrance is free with your ski pass, and when you’re done you can relax on the panoramic terrace and take in the jaw-dropping views.
Visit the Blue Lake
Lago Blu is a picturesque alpine lake situated not too far from the resort and well worth a visit. It’s an absolutely magical place to see in the spring and summer months (when the reflection of the Matterhorn decorates the glassy waters) but it’s just as captivating in winter, when it becomes a frozen wonderland. If conditions are right, it’s a great short hike (around 30 minutes) from the resort, and along with the main attraction there are three other small surrounding lakes (Layet Lakes) to explore.
Day Tripping
If you’ve got longer than just a few action-packed days in the resort, you might have time to take a few day trips to really make the most of this wonderful part of the world.
Zermatt: As mentioned, you can ski across the border into Switzerland, but if you’re having a lay day from the slopes, jump in the cable car to Zermatt to spend a few hours wandering the charming car-free streets. The vibrant centre of town is lined with cafes, restaurants, quirky boutiques, and tourist shops. Admire the traditional architecture of the Old Town, visit the Matterhorn Museum, then ascend the famous mountain itself on the Gornergrat Railway.
The Aosta Valley: There are lots of villages dotted throughout the chocolate-box perfect Aosta Valley, and any and all of them are worth a visit if you want to get a feel for traditional life. Expect to see gorgeous stone houses, medieval architecture, Roman roads, castles, fortresses, and vineyards — all set against the ever-present backdrop of the snow-capped Matterhorn.
Geneva: It’s a little further away (around 2 hours 45 minutes by car), but if you can build in an opportunity to spend a day (and perhaps a night) in Geneva, you’ll be richly rewarded. Stroll the Old Town, wander around the perimeter of the pristine lake, take a tour of the United Nations, or simply soak up the ambience of this beautiful jewel in Switzerland’s crown.
It’s hard to imagine not wanting to spend your entire ski holiday out on the slopes, but the truth is, you can sometimes have too much of a good thing. Choosing a resort that has more than one string to its bow is essential to a memorable and enjoyable minibreak: and lovely Breuil Cervinia excels in its offerings both on and off the snow.
